Interview With Kelsey, Fall 2018

Who are your musical influences?
My grandfather, Bill Henry, my uncle Greg Henry, and my Mom, Kim Stone are the biggest influences in my music.  I grew up listening to them sing and entertain and that is exactly who I still mimic.

Do you remember the first time music was something you knew you wanted to do?

Being raise into a musical family, I knew from the beginning that music was going to always be apart of my life. I was about 8 years old when I realized that I wanted to play the piano, sing, and write songs, and ever since that day I have been doing just that. I have never known a day without music, and I would love to continue doing what I have been made to do as a career one day.

If you had to choose 3 or 4 artists you are like, who are they?

I  am currently obsessing over Tori Kelly. Her range, her control, and her love for gospel music captivates me. We are alike in that we love to mix in the gospel!

I also love listening to Jordan Smith. He is somewhat new, and unfortunately not as successful as he should be. His ability to nail the high notes and also live in the low notes is so impressive. I also love that the majority of his songs are inspirational and speak words of encouragement, just like the majority of my songs!

Another artist that I love to listen to is, Mariah Carey. If she had only taken care of her voice, I believe that she would still be killing it. Her soulful and crystal clear voice keeps me on my toes, and inspires me to be able to do some of the same runs. I am not by any means saying that I am as good as her, but I do love to sing her songs more than anything.

I have been told that I resemble Kelly Clarkson. I don't know how much I believe that, but I do understand where they might get that from. The fact that she has been able to cross over from pop to country might be the reason we might sound alike.

- also love to try and sing like Carrie Underwood, her voice literally gives me the chills and I love singing her rendition of "How Great Thou Art."

Shooting for the stars, where do you want to be with your music in 10 years?

I honestly just want to sing for a living. I do not know what that looks like right now and I do not even know if that is still a chance for me, but it has always been a dream of mine since I was a child to sing. I sang for a couple of years with a southern gospel band, Eyewitness, and that is where my LOVE for music truly began! I want to sing and hopefully sing for the Lord. That is the DREAM!

What inspires you to write and perform?

I would love to say that I write just to write, but honestly I only write songs that are inspired by the Lord. Here and there, I will try to write a country or pop song and I find it so difficult. However, when writing a christian song it is like it just flows out of me. I truly believe that when I perform, I am performing for an audience of 1. The peace I have when I walk onto the stage, and the confidence I have when I am singing or playing the piano is because of the Lord and I would be crazy not to give him glory for that.

Is there anything unique about your childhood, experiences, and family background?

First and foremost, music is in my blood. My grandfather, Bill Henry, was a southern gospel song writer, singer, and piano player. He lead many mass choirs, and raised my mother to be a worship leader as well. After his passing, my Uncle Greg and mother, Kim Stone, started traveling and singing his songs. I was raised to entertain, and lead people in worship. Once our family moved to Russellville, AR my mother and I started traveling with a southern gospel band, Eyewitness, and singing nearly every weekend. This was a perfect opportunity for me to learn who I was as a singer, and also learn from the best. I appreciate the lifestyle that I have been blessed with, and I just do not want it to stop. I believe that there is more to my story, and I want to pursue it with all of my heart.

What is a funny or fun fact about you?

I have an obsession with avocados.

I love to rewrite famous songs and turn them into Christian songs!

I play 4 instruments.

I had the pleasure of singing with Gospel Hall of Fame Member Kelly Neelan.

I have played soccer for 16 years.
